hi
i have three fire salamanders (terrestris) one of these seems quite thin and always sat out during the day any ideas what could be wrong the others seem fine they are housed seperately in tanks with a peat and sand substrate plenty of hide places they are sprayed regulary with rain water and fed on worms, spiders, woodlice, slugs, and snails. my intention is that they go outside but obviously this one can't until this is resolved, when would be the best time of year to try them outside?

Lee cant really help you but Im new to keeping and also am wondering about when to move stuff outside. Every time I feel the weather is improving it seems to go artic again! While most are tougher than we give credit for I feel the sudden change might be fatal and would rather they got an aclimatizing time.

Hi lee
Are the tanks in a warm place ? (i.e near any heating devices) Do they recieve any direct sunlight at any part of the day ? Where did you get them ? Are they captive bred or wild caught ? how long have you had them ? Can you provide any pics ? Why did you choose to house them seperately ?
I can't see any reason why you couldn't put any healthy animals outdoors now. It would not do any harm to describe the outdoor housing in detail or provide pics especially if you are new to keeping amphibians.

hi
the tanks are in the utility room next to each other, i got the salamanders about two months ago since writing the original email i have bought some wax worms which although i haven't seen him eat them they have disappeared and his wandering has stopped which has put my mind at rest some.

Hi , I have been keeping Salamanders outside for the last 5 years and they are thriving , much better than the trouble of keeping in tanks as they can always find the hiding placees to suite them. I would put them out now as long as there are plenty of deep nooks and crannies to hide in , esp in winter.I just feed them on slugs I bait in the garden for and Manure from a local stables in one corner full of woodlice and redworms , + Black field crickets during warmer weather and just leave them to it. Best of luck with them , mine breed every year and drop juvs around late dec early Jan/

i too keep my terrestris group outdoors and they have thrived and bred ever since with the no intervention from me. it would probably benefit them to go outdoors as soon as possible
