how deep into the ground should i go with the sides of my out door viv. i plan to make it from 8'' x 2''x 4 (32" high) with a 6'' perspex overhang at the top to stop climbing out, would this be suitable

alpine newts and salamandra species pool frogs,slow worms and maybe european pond turtles,wall lizards and common lizards (not all in one viv)

dependant on what kind of ground your on terry, i would go about a foot deep, but i also bury a layer of 1cm plastic mesh. it maybe a little ott but some herps are known burrowers and if the substrate is fairly loose slow-worms are partial to a bit of tunneling

the ground is pretty solid here so if i go down about 8'' it should be ok then, do i put the plastic just around the edge or all over the ground

I would agree about 12 inches is about right. You could fix mesh around the edge only and maybe fix it to the sides. It seems herps often favour to dig at the edge of enclosures! Use outdoor grade silicon (The type that is used around doors windows etc). It also helps if you compact the soil around the edge, particularly if it a clay type.
