they look healthy killian, are they feeding well? i know its probably not ethically correct, but if you have an excess of temporaria tadpoles, these are greatly relished. european newts however are a big no-no as garters cannot cope with the toxins the way natrix do. nice to see them so healthy, are they outside yet?

They are feeding very well. They are not outside just yet as I havent decided on what sort of enclosure I will build for them. Its still very cold here, we had ice and hailstones here last night.

My Fire salamanders are the most inactive of all my amphibians. I cannot understand why perhaps it is because they are wild caught and not "tame"?

I thought these snakes would have hunted underwater but ive offered them several aquatic prey species such as tadpoles and minnows in a bowl of water but eventually i had to offer them with tweezers.
Did you ever get some pics of your outdoor snake enclosure Phil?

i have one female sub-adult but promised her to adamanuran. round about may i will be able to get neonates from a friend. i'll let you no how much he wants, but he usually has 3or400 of them. if hardened off early they should do very well outdoors, especially in ireland as it tends to be somewhat milder than here

Bit of a Steve Irwin moment when this little snake got fed up with getting her photo taken. Click the picture to watch the video

superb bit of footage killian. try leaving them for a day or 2 with a bowl of tadpoles. they will find them eventually, and will benefit from this diet change. i will p.m you tomorrow about a female chequered, which i will send you if you want.

hi killian i have been going through some old threads and came across your one about your garter snakes, i have kept garter snakes for many years and i thought you might appreciate a feeding tip, you mentioned a problem with feeding, have you tried cat food either the cans or the sachets start them off with seafood platter and after that you will find that they take just about any type chicken, beef tuna, salmon, and the best part apart from the convenience is the cost, little more than coppers in the supermarket they really thrive on it hope you find this useful
cheers pinjohn

I gave up on these guys I figured they were too difficult to keep in without building a brick walled enclosure. They were feeding very well though on small pieces of fish. I figure it just took a while to settle them in. I still think these are the most suitable snakes for outdoors as they will eat from a bowl!
