i've been thinking, would it be possible to mix both reptiles and amphibians in an outdoor vivarium? i was thinking along the lines of small european lizards like wall/common lizards or slowworms with amphibians?

I have mixed loads, wall lizards with pretty much everything, providing habitats are ok. The species you mention would be fine!!

right seems like everything should work. the plan is as follows:
1. dig a very large hole. 2. line the hole with netting. 3. build a hibernacular in the middle of the hole, and a pond at one end. 4. fill the hole in again with soil. 5. lay breeze blocks as a foundation for the coldframe, so that the holes in the middle are horizontal and not blocked. 6. place and fix coldframe onto breeze blocks. 7. create a perimeter wall around the half without breeze blocks. 8. decorate. 9. add animals.
the plan is to have the coldframe mostly in the sun, and to have the open-air bit mostly in the shade, therefore accomodating for both reptiles and amphibians, the reptiles get access to both sides through the holes in the breeze blocks, the hibernacular has entrances both inside the frame and outside. the plan above is simplified a bit.
as for species i'm thinking along the lines of wall lizards and slowworms, and for amphibians mesotriton alpestris and bombina sp. (probably variegata).
one last thing is it legal to collect slowworms from the wild?

Perfectly legal to collect and keep etc, illegal to harm or sell or trade.

okay good! now to find a source of slow worms in Shropshire, i might check the allotments nearby when it gets a little warmer (we've had quite a bit of snow recently, totally out of character for our part of the world!)

I'm not up on my Reptiles but I do believe some populations are localy protected (I'm sure there is a protected population here in Worcestershire) so it would be wise to check with your local ARG.

Legislation relating to the slow-worm Slow-worms are protected against killing, injuring and sale under UK legislation:
Bern Convention 1979: Appendix III Wildlife & Countryside Act (as Amended) 1981: Schedule 5 Countryside Rights of Way Act 2000 (CRoW 2000) Following an amendment in 1988 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981, part of Section 9(1) and all of Section 9(5) apply to the slow-worm’s listing on Schedule 5 of the Act. Consequently, under parts of Section 9(1) slow-worms are protected against intentional killing and injuring but not ‘taking’. Under Section 9(5) it is an offence to offer for sale, transport for sale, advertise for the purpose of trading any live, dead, part, or derivative of, slow-worms. Section 9 applies to all stages in their life cycle.
The maximum fine on conviction of offences is currently £5000. The CRoW Act amended the 1981 Act to allow for a custodial sentence of up to six months instead of, or in addition to, a fine. Fines may be imposed in relation to each offence committed, so operations involving many animals or repeated offences can potentially accrue large fines. In addition, items or equipment, which may constitute evidence of the commission of an offence, may be seized and detained. The CRoW Act also amends the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 to render Section 9 offences ‘arrestable’, giving the police significant additional powers.
If in doubt over any legal issue relating to slow worms contact the relevant Statutory Nature Conservation Organisation (SNCO) for advice (Links).

my local garden centre had some, they've had them for ages, i'm not really suprised, who would want dull brown lizards when there are green anolis in the same cage for the same price!
