very suprised when i came home from work today, to find 7 or 8 bufo bufo in my pond plus a couple of strings of spawn. this group are obviously the result of a previous introduction of spawn a couple of years ago which i had long forgotten about. they are all small adults so this is their first breeding year. i'm very proud of this success and hope this will go on to become a healthy self sustaining population. from my experience native newts do not show quite the same relish for bufo tadpoles as they do for rana. even so, i intend to remove some strings of spawn, and rear them at least part way to metamorphosis away from the marauding caudates to ensure at least some youngsters leave the pond this summer. pics will follow soon.
