Has anybody on this forum had any success with Oriental Fire Bellied Toads in an outdoor vivaria? Considered getting some but would like to know if they're hardy enough. Please advise. Also, has anybody any Bombina bombina and Bombina variegata for sale or know of anywhere that does? Cheers.

Hi Garry,
I have 10 orientalis in an outdoor enclosure; however I only received them this spring so it remains to be seen how well they will do in the winter. The viv is tucked up under a hedge for extra winter protection and I tend to put down loads of leaves and fleece blanket on all the vivs during the winter.
Technically they should be OK as here in the South west we tend to get wet winters as opposed to cold;
That said it was minus 8 at one point last winter!

Hi Garry
I have a pair of Oriental Firebellies which have now lived in a totally unprotected outdoor vivarium for three years. So they have survived through just about every variation the southern british climate can throw at them! Chris

Hello Garry,
I succesfully bred from a pair of OFBTs in an outside Viv in 2009 who only went in in may of same year. Took 16 tadpoles out to rear indoors and 11 toadlets munching their way through mountains of fruit flys as we speak! Still waiting to see if adults and other toadlets made it through snow.

I keep this species outside successfully, and have a small group of 6 i'm waiting on to show themselves this year. Although admittedly i'm more a fan of the European Bombina's.
Cheers Alex

Went out last night with a torch to see what was moving in the amphib enclosures - mild, wet night. The arborea were mooching around - although no sign of any spawning activity! However I did spot three orientalis, the first time I have seen them since last year - so that could be encouraging.
