With the volcano blowing its top in Iceland, would there be a concern about acid rain on the outside enclosers water area. We are predicted North East winds with rain showers the next few days here in the UK. Just a little concerned about the acid that may fall with the rain, has anyone else considered this or do you think there is no need to worry? Would it be a good idea to cover the water area up?

I guess most of us have ponds but I have not heard any news that acid rain will be falling this week, only that we are in for lots of sunshine and some hot days, which we are now enjoying. I think it might be rather difficult to cover a reasonable size pond without the rain gathering on the cover and falling in. Unless you are actually on hand to rush out with a piece of glass, I do not see how it could be done.
Are you thinking more of outdoor terrapines and large expensive koi carp? I would think we would probably hear on the news if there was a severe problem ahead. Lizards water dishes can be kept topped up with fresh water and small bathing areas cleaned but probably as well to wait and see.

I think acid rain is caused by car exhaust fumes which have a different chemical make up to volcanic ash. Sulphur is emited from the volcano, in high concentrations it is dangerous. I think if the ash dis come down it would be our lungs that would be the worry! Silica is in the very fine volcanic dust which penetrates right through human lungs and could cause cancer! fingers crossed it will blow away though!
