do you mean sinking the box into the soil? If so some worms mat migrate into the box but I would think not many. Also they would remain out of sight and not be eaten. If you don't like digging you could half bury a paving slab and keep the area damp.Worms will appear underneath

last autumn my 8 adults went into hibernation. there were many places for them to choose from, some of them deep underground. only one appeared in the spring. the winter was long but not really severe. they are found naturally in very cold areas in eastern asia for example Korea. Has anyone had similar experiences or explanation?

I have a property on the Algarve with a pond I made 2 years ago. I keep it full of water. My sharp ribs arrive after the first rains [now] and stay until may. I was expecting them to stay the summer but they leave , presumably to aestivate in a damp spot. This must be deep down as usually no rain for 5 months

Assuming the enclosure is in the sun have you considered a small pump? you could run the water back into the pool through black tubing or over a black surface. a thermostat or timer may be advised. Heaters would generally use more wattage.

I would not recommend polystyrene on the bottom. If the winter is very bad like 2010 the contents of your box could be below zero. The subsoil remains warmer and this heat would not be able to pass through the bottom of your polystyrene box.

Over the years I have fed these to a large variety of tropical lizards and a white's tree frog. Lizards chomp up their food before swallowing it. I havre had 2 large female common toads in my 5x2 metre outside vivarium for about a month. They ate large black crickets and after a week or so started waiting in the feed tray at dusk. Crickets in the house are a bit unpopular so i decided to give them giant meal worms instead. I fed them several of these 2 nights in a row. They have not been seen now for 2 weeks. They cannot escape and are presumed dead. The vivarium is escape proof but unfortunately I cannot find the bodies as it contains almost 2 tons of rock. I googled this and because amphibians do not chew the worms remain alive long enough in the amphibians stomach to do serious damage with their strong jaws.

Dear all, I joined the site recently. It is not very busy. I suspect some guest visitors are members who have not logged in. I have done this myself.
There is a parallel story with some restaurants. The open. The food is good. The staff and customers are enthusiastic. Then gradually little things go wrong. Perhaps a good chef or waiter leaves. Maybe a new manager does everything wrong and upsets the staff and customers. gradually people stop going and tell their friends. The money coming in does not cover the overheads. Morale is low and staff either leave or are made redundant. Customers go to other restaurants. The restaurant closes. We have nearly 300 members. If 5% of us posted something that would be 15 posts. Might I suggest a list of creatures you are keeping and perhaps a quick comment I'll start. I have common frogs, toads and 2 species of newt breeding wild in garden. I am just constructing a 5 meter enclosure intending keeping bombina, water frogs of some sort and wall lizards. Progress has been slow due to me starting with a vague plan in my head rather than detailed written ones. The walls are to be made of toughened glass.Yesterday I accidentally hit one of them with a hammer and now have several thousand tiny pieces of glass on top of my pond liner. A temporary but expensive set back.
