If the ponds deep enough the Notophthalmus are most likely to over winter under water just float a tennis ball or similar on the surface to keep a gap in the ice.

will do! since my original site is now "toxic" my Grandparents say that i can put the cage at their house, they only live down the road from me so i can easily pop in to check on them. can't wait to get started!
