at what length do the young sallys morph. some of mine are now almost 6cm long and they seem to be going darker in colour, but there is no visible reduction inthe gill size even though they are constantly taking gulps of air

some of them may stay like that over the winter, do you keep them outside?
I have some alpines doing the same. as an experiment i took one inside thinking the heat would make him morph no he still has gills after about 2 months indoors!!

the larvae are kept indoors at 15c water temp.as i said, this is the first year i have bred from them and i only found the larvae by accident as i was removing leaves from the shallow pond in the enclosure. the adults are kept outside
