I've just been out to my pond and found the first clutch of the year: There were 3 pairs of R.temporaria in amplexus, a few male L.vulgaris and some over wintered L.vulgaris larvae.

Hi, Can anyone provide advice on captive husbandry of temporaria, please? I have 3 little guys who are not indigenous to my area so I dare not release them and, although I have housed them for several months, now, I still worry I do not know enough about their husbandry. Thanks!

Rana spawn here first appeared about 2 weeks ago. First two spawn clumps now hatched. Very pleased to have had total 9 spawns clumps as the population was almost lost to red-leg. In 2004 only 1 spawn clump, last year 3 so progress indeed. Both Smooth and palmate newts in abundance for the last two weeks - never seen so many here.

plenty of clumps in my pond now, and about half of it has hatched. mixed emotions however about the large amount of newts which have returned this year, as this usually spells disaster for the majority of the temporaria tadpoles. both l.vulgaris and helviticus seem more abundant than ever.

how can you have mixed feelings about newts? pond is full of vulgaris and cristatus, plus tons of frog and toad spawn. and hopefully a pair of helveticus after they escaped
