are you sure there were atra there? they'd have come from a different source, as they aren't a Spanish species. Where is this store?

i doubt the marbled newts were of spanish origin if the males were in breedig dress at this time of year, spanish marbled and pygmy marbled are normally in breeding dress sometime before christmas through to march in the wild. they are probably french. never the less its still worrying to see them in garden centres as most will probably end up in a garden pond. as andrew (pollywog) pointed out to me a while back, once on british soil these imports are legal in spite of their protective status in the country of origin.

All of these species mentioned other than atra are being offered by one of the large UK wholesalers at the moment. They don't all originate from the same collection so are not all Spanish. These are illegaly collected & smuggled out of their country of origin and are illegaly smuggled into the UK, however once they find their way in the UK pet trade they are technically legal under UK law.
