Chris, Highly unlikely you'll get some Cristatus. Although they are available to people with the neccessary paperwork, most of these will be involved with amphibian conservation/study in the UK etc. I have to ask why do you want to keep them?. There are plenty of European crested newts that are captive bred in the trade, such as Carnifex and Dobrogicus. www.dartfrog.co.ukSome captive bred Danube Crested (Dobrogicus) available at this address.

"most of these will be involved with amphibian conservation/study in the UK etc"
that pretty much answers it, i'm currently taking a degree in zoology. anything i can learn from keeping them in captivity will be of great benifit to any future conservation programs i get involved with
from looking into the legislation from what i can tell the wildlife and countryside act only applies to wild specimins, and the licencing is also for wild specimins. ofcourse if there's something i've missed and i do need some sort of licence or documents for keeping captive bred newts then please let me know so i can get it sorted asap
cheers, Chris

Hi Chris, I've PM'ed you a suitable forum to take this post. It's a conservation based forum not a keepers forum (although there are keepers on there). If you have an avid interest in conservation of our native species (as I have) this will be of much interest to you

did you manage to get any cristatus eggs chris? if you did, and you do manage to grow them into adults, please bear me in mind for some of their eggs. i dissagree with people who say we shouldn't keep native newts. providing the eggs , larvae or adults are of captive bred origin, this can only be good for cristatus, as surplus eggs or larvae could be used to seed new colonies or at least prop up existing ones that are in decline. i know laws and regulations are put into place to protect our wildlife, and on the whole go a long way towards doing this. however, as my previous sentence suggests, it is "our wildlife"and banning people from keeping or studying it is not the way forward in my opinion. its almost like taking the blame away from the reasons for amphibian and reptile decline in britain, which is mainly to do with habitat loss , certainly not the keeping of captive colonies. how many axolotls would be left were it not for captive colonies
