HI ppl,
Im From Malta, and we've got quite a good climate for lizards, since it doesnt get too cold in winter, an average of 12 C at night from December to Feb. usually its higher, and a day time temperature of 20-24C. In summer its hot! daytime temperatures reaching their 40s
I have a group of seven uromastyx, and id like to build them an outdoor vivarium, where they can utilize the suns rays, which they love..
Any ideas pls, on size, and most of all technique and materials needed.. this would be my first outdoor vivarium.
Thanks

Hi Dave Your climate is ok to keep them outside all year IF you are keeping acanthinurus, loricata, asmussi or aegyptia maybe even other species. As i remember you are living in a dry rocky habitat but it is still mandatory to dig down and make a proper hibernation area for them. At least 50 cm down and fill it with dry leaves or similar material. We use Styropor an isolation material used in houses here. All Uromastyx likes heat and a lot of it. It can still get too much and them they will use the hibernation burrow to cool down. I have seen acanthinurus living in terraria all year outside in Alabama where the temperaure in winter can go down to -15*C So with proper care the winter in your place shouldn´t be the problem. Here in Denmark (WAY WAY up north) we can keep them outside from March to October. Important is that they must get the UV light. Covering with glass is a very bad idea. If they don`t get enough UV-light you should ad D-vitamins and calciumcarbonat with their food.
Best wishes Søe

Yes Bert is an old friend for more than 30 years and THE MASTER of outdoor keeping, breeding (and limiting the expences to an absolute minimum) ;D I have been ower there helping him during his cancer treatment this Spring and off course got a lot of new ideas. I have plans to make a copy of his "Timo Terrace" here for my lizards. About 300 square meters all together. A lot of work to do but hopefully ready next summer. Best wishes Søe
