thats superb andrew. wish we had natrix in the garden. i usually have to drive at least 50 or 60 miles to have a good chance of seeing one. well worth losing the odd newt, frog or goldfish to have grass-snakes visit the garden pond

well my garden backs onto a farm with lots of grassland & woodland and I've often seen them in the fields but this is the first time I've seen one in the garden

Hi I made a large compost pile 2 years ago, and placed some eggs from Natrix n. natrix there. When I found the babies I marked them in the belly scales and last week I found a large female (92 cm) comming back to the place to hibernate (It is Autum here now) Maybe they will come back and deposit their eggs the same place as they were hatched. I find it VERY interesting to find out Bufo bufo are comming back to the place they were tadpoles. Such an investigation is not made with reptiles ( or I haven`t seen any study about it) so I will be looking at my compost pile in midsummer Best wishes Søe
