Out of interest, how does everyone here go about hibernating there animals outdoors?. Not all of my enclosures have hibernacula so most of the adult animals are gathered up (which is very time consuming i can tell you!) and placed in polystyrene boxes which are filled with leaves, sand and moss and placed in an outdoor shed (which i don't think is entirely frost proof itself). It's that time of year i always absolutely dread as you never quite know whats going to come through the long sleep successfully....and what isn't. Perhaps others would like to share tips?...

I've not had any major problems in the past, but nevertheless, it's not a season i look forward to (even though there's less work!). I've picked up a few new species this year so will be keeping my fingers crossed as to how they fare this winter.

I hibernate all my animals outside. the majority find their own places to hibernate and do very well outside even in thick frost and snow!
All my enclosures include a hibernaculum apart from my alpine newts as they seem to be indifferent to the weather, retreating to the pond when it gets really cold!
My hibernacula are as simple as a hole in the ground filled with slabs rocks and wood then covered with a paving stone or a peice of wood.
My reptiles dig under the roots of the plants in the greenhouse!
