Hi Guys, What do you thinks about Vermiculite for a viv. substrate? I have just spotted some for sale on e-bay. Would you say too much can be ingested by lizards? Do you know what mineral value is in it. I have one skink that liked to eat it. She would push the lid off the tortoise egg box and climb in I know it says it's none toxic but I do not think I would use it as a substrate. Your views please. B.

Hi Barb Normally it is used for incubating eggs of course. I think it is too light for a substrate, but I have used it mixed in with loam and coir for egg laying boxes indoors and out with good results.
I think it would right through the body of a reptile undigested. In fact my leopard geckos seem to eat alot of it !

I think it would be OK to lighten up a heavy substrate- I use it for that purpose in my vegetable garden because I have a lot of clay in my soil. Would make burrowing easier I think if mixed with the soil.
I wouldn't use it alone though- too light.
