I have one pair of these in a huge enclosure outside, I should have bought a few more pairs but hopefully they will breed next year the pond is not that big, roughly 2'6" around. Do they breed early in the year? do the males develop any sort of breeding crest? I presume mine are the same as these are these the ones that have the really red efts?

In my experiance they tend to breed all year round although mainly in the late winter / early spring. As for a crest no they don't but they do develop a high tail fin. They don't need vast areas of water to breed, In the past I have bred them in pairs in 18"x12" tanks at a water depth of just 2".

well something very interesting has happened, you see the nive female without any black spots, well, it has recently grown many spots and it looks identical to the other 3 now.
something else of interest, in my vivarium i sunk two plastic boxes to make 2 pools instead of one, in one i had a gravel substrate and in the other a soil substrate. Well, it seems that they prefer a gravel bottom as all newts were in the gravel box. as an experiement, i've put all four into the soil box to see if they move at all.

could be all the natural food and sunlight bringing out the spots??
interesting observation on the gravel, perhaps the soil affected the PH of the water?

they are in doors in a 4 ft enclosure and they are fine with each other, the only prob is i wish 2 add a few cuban treefrogs in the viv and was just wondering if they would be alright with the newts and frogs.

this isnt really what this forum is intended for, try caudata, as that is a more general forum. I would like to keep this forum about outdoor/ European herps. Sorry we cant help! post your email address and some other member may email you to help. I will be deleting the latter part (about the indoor animals) of this thread in a few days.
