does anyone know if it is legal to keep cristatus providing they are cb. and if so does anyone know of a breeder. i've never seen them offered for sale, and i'm unsure as to how the law stands regarding cristatus. all central and western european countries have protection in place regarding triturus species, and yet some places still offer them for sale as wild caught. the female marmoratus i purchased recently is wild caught. how can this be legal, when both france and spain have protection in place. i also know that vulgaris, helviticus and cristatus are occaisionally offered for sale in america. how can this be if it is illegal for us to keep them. any help or information regarding the law in britain would be appreciated.

Hi Phil, It is legal to keep and breed T.cristatus of CB origin, I can get them readily from a number of breeders but not at this time of year. As for the legal trade of illegal animals as far as UK law is concerned once an animal is on UK soil it is legal stock wether it was collected legaly or not. Here's a pic of a CB cristatus:

plus Britain allows vulgaris and helveticus to be collected. (in most counties)

thanks mate, thats put me straight on most things. i would love to keep cristatus. when you hear of any available, could you let me know. i'm in oldham, gtr manchester. we have crested newts fairly locally but i would never collect them.i have palmates in my garden pond.
