got a phone call at about 5.30pm today from a friend who had gone to whitby for the day. whilst walking back to his car he found a female cristatus probably on its way back to a pond. needless to say he moved it off the footpath to a safer place and off it went. seems a little early for activity in the north east, i havent seen any adult newts yet in my pond, but the frogs are back. i'll see if i can get some pics tomorrow

Well the first reports of cristatus spawning in the UK started early January this year. I've got adult vulgaris in the garden pond along side over wintered larvae but not been out to survey any local ponds yet this year. That reminds me it was the first ARG UK national meeting this weekend, did anybody go? I forgot all about it.

i'll have to check out the ponds here in sunny Shropshire, being milder here, perhaps they will have started, hey even the Notos could have started!
