As you probably know salamanders enjoy eating slugs, in an outdoor vivarium there is no need to go out collecting slugs to put in the tank, simply invite the slugs in.
How? get a small dish of soaked dog food and the slugs will be attracted in, if there is plenty of cover in the vivarium they should stay until the salamanders find them.
this can also be used for other slug lovers toads etc.
This can also attract rats so a mesh lid that allows the slugs through but not rodents. 1/2" should be fine.

Hi Killian, are your salamandra showing any signs of dropping their young yet?

how do you stop the salamanders from escaping while allowing the slugs and other food items to enter?

There is an overhang of plastic around the top. the slugs have no problem traveling up the side of the vivarium along the lip and upside down along the underside of the lip and in. they usually stay amoung the rocks etc in the enclosure then.

Soak the dry dog food in beer drives the slugs mad This could also poison a salamander in my experience. Maybe restrictions on underage drinking 😄. Found a baby slug in my yard, in bowl with a little beer in it. Fed to juvinile S. algira tingitana. Animal showed no life symptoms for two days! I was going to flush him, but my experience told me wait until he starts stinking. On third day, Fire salamander started moving slowly, bumping into things.
