Leave them in a big tub of water outside. Give them a bit of fish food until algae is growing well, and then supplement occasionally with spirulina flakes fish flakes and a little fd tubifex. It has worked for me for a few years.

What do you move them on to after metamorphose? I am just planning on releasing them into a large enclosure and attracting in as many small inverts as possible, using fruit, meat and maybe even lights at night time?

I was going to say let them go in the garden, but then realised that you can't as they are not native in Ireland. Your ideas sound fine though. Keep a couple in a viv in a cool spot indoors and feed them collembola, acarids, drosophila and aphids etc. In 1 year you will be quite impressed with their growth. I have some that i released immediately after metamorphosis and they were almost adult size in 18months. (this was in a cold frame) i did not feed them or anything.

It is amazing how much food gets into outdoor vivaria. I am building a large enclosure in the garden to release them into.

Well its about 5 months later and the little toads are starting to become more visable due to their increasing size. these little guys have completly fended for themselves since they left the water. They were in a 6' x 8' enclosure with lots of rotting wood and stone piles. Most of you from the UK wont be very impressed as you have these guys in your back gardens but I am really pleased as they are not a native to Ireland and I only know one other person here that keeps them.

Hi Killian Although I have the good fortune to have a huge colony of toads in my garden, nonetheless I am impressed. Yours are looking lovely and healthy and growth rate is excellent. I find B. bufo a very attractive animal simply by virtue of its behaviour. I'm sure they will continue to give you much pleasure. Well done! Chris
